North Asia is one of the largest markets for New Zealand premium consumer goods and high-value commodity products for offshore processing. Investment stock in New Zealand from North Asian countries reached over NZ$17 billion in 2002, with Hong Kong and Japan as the largest investors.

Investment from Hong Kong rose slightly through 2002 to NZ$11.9 billion, while investment from Japan fell 10% to NZ$4.5 billion. Chinese investment more than doubled to $1.2 billion between 2001 and 2002.

North Asian investment has traditionally been mainly resource-based, with investments in wood processing and milling facilities, bio-prospecting and natural food and beverage products.

Current investments include biotechnology and software research and development partnerships. These harness New Zealand innovation to provide greater competitiveness to Asian manufacturing giants.

Investment New Zealand’s market coverage in North Asia includes Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, and has expanded its staff in Hong Kong to generate further investment opportunities in this key market.
